How Cursor Redefined Tech SWAG at Compile 2026
If you were at Fort Mason for Compile 2026, you likely heard or participated in the afternoon rush at the 2nd floor ‘Keyboard Event.’ At Cursor’s mainstage event this year, marketing agency Wonder invited MKRO’s team to help them throw out the traditional tech conference playbook and SWAG strategy. No cheap plastic pens, thumb-drives, and other throwaways. Nothing generic or mass-printed. Instead, over 500 of Cursor’s top partners and power users packed the room for a massive interactive custom keyboard assembly experience.
Here, we’re breaking down the one-of-a-kind experience, why it aligned so well with Cursor’s mission, and a preview as to what you can expect with this new merchandise and gifting program we’re setting up with the AI powerhouse.
The Ultimate Dev Networking Experience
What happens when you put hundreds of developers, founders, and AI engineers in a room with rows of unbuilt boards, switches, and custom keycaps? A special event that is technical, energetic, and infinitely productive.
Building keyboards has historically been a solitary experience as individual buyers choose parts to tinker and assemble at their home desks. This is no longer the case as we and Wonder set up a very open and social environment for participants to bring their parts in a dedicated public space. With a common activity that brought international devs together for 30-45 minutes, these build events were tailored as a networking and bond-building catalyst.
Above all, we were thrilled with the level of excitement amongst the rows of attendees meticulously snapping together their builds, the buzzing anticipation in the parts line, and the sheer triumph of the participants as they plugged in their completed keyboards for the first time.
The landscape of SWAG has changed rapidly over the last several years and previously common options can often miss the mark or make their way straight to a hotel waste bin. Here and throughout SF, the developer and AI community is highly discerning. Generic swag doesn’t resonate because it doesn't respect and align with the industry.
A custom mechanical keyboard, however, is the ultimate developer instrument. By offering a high-tier, highly sensorial, and productive tool, Cursor demonstrated a deep understanding of their user base's technical interests. It wasn't just a giveaway; it was an investment in their daily workflow and relationship with the AI platform.
The impact was immediate. Attendees couldn't wait to show off their customized builds, tagging Cursor and sharing their typing kits. The organic reach from proud developers showcasing their new desk centerpieces completely outperformed standard event marketing.
Engineering the Future of Desk Culture with Cursor
This massive success at Compile 2026 is just the beginning. We are incredibly excited to continue partnering with Cursor to design a comprehensive, long-term keyboard and desk strategy tailored for their elite developer network and ongoing marketing initiatives. Stay tuned, the future of Cursor-inspired hardware is looking incredibly promising and will set the standard for how businesses represent their brand and craft their experience for each individual user.
We also want to give a massive shoutout to the experiential agency Wonder, who masterfully organized this event with us.
